I have really taken a liking to the Clean & Press and was hoping for some advice on how to improve my press, i can get some decent weight onto my shoulders but i suffer with my press, any ideas, thanks guys
Hi mate,
First thing I would do is look at the loading protocol you use for training the press. What do you use currently?
You could try using a 5 x 5 inspired protocol, where you perform 5 sets of 5 on your working sets, 3 times a fortnight, going up 2.5kg each session. I'd suggest you start off pretty easy then slowly work up over a couple of months.
Regarding technique, try gripping the bar very hard to activate the tris. Focus on exploding up with as much force as possible, particularly on the easier weights (after your shoulders are warmed up of course).
Hey Greg try some push press to try and get the shoulders going and maybe a hang clean/press to iron out the rough patches. So long as you can make a relatively smooth transition from the clean and straight into the press I think gives you the best chance of getting the weight up.
Many times I have cleaned the weight only to rest it and then the brain say there is no way. That, and lack of momentum during the transitions will just kill the lift.
Not a bad idea Nutty.
Gwindow, you could try alternating with push press, just to get the feel of some heavier pressing weights, there should be a bit of carryover to the clean and press also.
Good luck and be sure to log it mate so we can see your progress.
